The Consequences of War

So this painting by Peter Paul Rubens is a thing of beauty. This will be the first of many ramblings about the pieces of art throughout history that have inspired me the most. I always like the way gods and goddesses of ancient cultures are essentially plugged in to current events. Mars represents war marching forward. He is being held back but won't be stopped. He will eventually trample the peasants before him.
Europe frequently has extremely dark spats of violence, and this was one of them. Pretty typical stuff actually. Most of it about religion. The Baroque style is with a doubt the most emotionally expressive.

More to follow.
